The Cycle of Control: the power struggle

Image
Do you feel that since the children have been gone that your life has been changed upside down? You feel like someone else is holding the strings to your existence? Well many women go through that struggle where they feel that they can't get a handle on what's going on.      On January 21st my life changed in the worst way possible.  My babies that I had loved for so long were being taken.  Through no fault of their own, they were now wards of the state.  A situation I promised myself I would never allow my children to have to bear witness to.     Along with the changes that was going on with the kids, came my marriage on the rocks.  I went from being a newly wed, to a foster mom for two years and then a potential divorcee and my world as I knew it was no more.  The blame game started and the constant arguments and then the feeling of betrayal.  I truly felt like someone else was holding the strings to my lif...

#WewillrebuildDominica Tropical Storm Erica

Hi, My name is Georgette George-Wilson. I am from an island called Dominica. Last spring break an opportunity came up to help a community that needed assistance after they suffered so much after hurricane Katrina. I received an email that asked for volunteers and while I didn't quite understand my decision, I knew that I was born to serve. So I signed up to volunteer, to do what I was born to do. I went on the alternative breaks in Biloxi, Ms, and my life was forever changed by the experience that I was exposed to. It was there that I met a group of ladies from  ‪#‎ Sueshouse‬  who opened my eyes and heart to the true meaning of volunteering and doing for others that may not look like me, be like me or even speak like me. It was my pleasure to have done a great service to a community that greatly needed the assistance. Since coming I have started a ministry called i ‪#‎ dayzafter‬ . Its about helping women and children rebuild and love again after bring taken from their home...

TROPICAL STORM ERIKA HAS HIT THE ISLAND OF DOMINICA

Tropical storm Erica has hit the Caribbean Island of Dominica.  It is a small island located in the Lesser Antilles.  The government is calling on all those abroad to help and lend a hand to rebuild our beautiful nature island. While we already have saturated soil, there goes more bad weather approaching the island.  " According to Mr Alexander, a tropical wave is forecast to move across the Lesser Antilles by early tomorrow Saturday, 29 August 2015 “producing an increase in cloudiness, showers and possible isolated thunderstorms and unstable conditions are expected to linger until Sunday morning”. I urge my fellow citizens to take caution and evacuate if you are able to.  There are several gofundme accounts set up to assist the island.  There are also relief efforts for supplies, and I am sure there will be for water, and human assistance to rebuild.   Lets all come together to rebuild our country, there is no division in times of disaster.   The ...

Grief, Loss, Suicide Prevention

Well today I had to deal with loss of a close family friend by suicide. It is never easy dealing with loss and it is ten times harder I believe when it’s unexpected and it’s by suicide. Telling a family member that we have suffered this loss is never easy. I had to tell my granny today that one of her close friends growing up just committed suicide. she was in shocked and couldn’t believe that I was telling her that. For those of you who have ever dealt with this, How did you cope? I know that all grief is hard. For those contemplating suicide, find someone that you can talk to, someone that you can confide in and let it out. there has to be another answer. Whats makes us make those decisions? stress is something we are now realizing is one of the biggest killers in our society. Reach out to family and friends. Check up of your family and friends. Once that time has come and gone there is nothing you can do to change the course. Most of us tonight are asking ourselves why and wh...

DISPARITIES WITHIN THE FOSTER SYSTEM AMONG PEOPLE OF COLOR

Image
In NY, black families more likely to be split by foster care system http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/6/25/new-york-foster-care-system-racial-disparity.html  Many of us know too well, that the black population is very much present in the foster care system, and even though the state provides incentives such as subsidy it is much more difficult to get a child of color adopted than the other race. Most times, a teacher will see a child without proper clothes and or shoes and automatically label that child as being neglected and makes a call that changes this child's life most times for the worst, rather than see the need, provide the service to satisfy that need.  A child may be in situation where mom works over time to support, but may need a little help. sometimes for fear of being labeled she does not seek government assistance, but a friend that cares may be just what she needs to understand that you can ask for help and not be labeled.  When I was...

Teach one Reach one

Image
On this journey I didn't quite understand how to go about reach you, as we had never met before, what I did know what that I wanted to bring you a message.  I thought that I had to reach everyone, but I am slowly learning that If I can make a difference in the life of one individual then I would have done my job.  I never knew God as my personal savior until the age of 30.  Some may say that is old, but I say as long as you find him it matters not the age.  My hope that is that you find comfort in knowing that God loves you and that you are special to him. We are facing so much crime in our communities. We can't even go to the movies any more, or the gas stations without someone threatening our lives.  I say you can't save everyone, just do the best you can in the present corner at which you are standing now. #dayzafter
